What the work involves

Main duties

  • Read blueprints and welding process specifications
  • Weld metals using processes such as GTAW, GMAW, FCAW and SMAW
  • Operate flame-cutting, brazing and soldering equipment
  • Use metal shaping machines such as brakes and shears
  • Repair worn metal parts by adding weld layers
  • Machine operators: run, adjust and monitor pre-set welding machines and robotic lines

Employment requirements

  • Welders: secondary school plus a three-year apprenticeship, or over three years of experience plus courses, for trade certification
  • Trade certification is compulsory in Alberta and voluntary elsewhere; Red Seal is available
  • Machine operators: some secondary school and several months of on-the-job training
Partly regulated: trade certification is compulsory in Alberta and voluntary in all other provinces and territories (per NOC profile).
