How Express Entry works

  1. Check you qualify for at least one program. Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Federal Skilled Trades (FST). Each has its own minimum work, language and education rules.
  2. Create a profile. You enter the pool with your language results, education assessment (for foreign credentials) and work history. A profile stays valid for 12 months.
  3. Get a CRS score. The Comprehensive Ranking System scores age, education, language, Canadian experience, skill combinations and a few bonuses, out of 1,200.
  4. Wait for a round. IRCC holds rounds for all programs, for one program (for example CEC), or for a category such as French speakers or healthcare workers. Everyone at or above that round's cutoff who meets its conditions is invited.
  5. Apply within 60 days. An invitation to apply (ITA) is valid for 60 days. IRCC's service standard for most complete applications is six months.

What changed recently

  • Job offers no longer add CRS points. Arranged-employment points were removed on March 25, 2025, for everyone in the pool.
  • Program and category rounds dominate. The last round open to all programs was in April 2024. Since then IRCC has invited mostly through CEC rounds, provincial nominee rounds and category rounds.
  • 2026 categories. Ten categories are in effect, including new ones for physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian experience, and skilled military recruits. See the categories page.
