What the work involves

Main duties

  • Read blueprints to plan plumbing, water supply and drainage layouts
  • Install, repair and maintain plumbing fixtures and systems
  • Mark pipe positions and cut openings in walls and floors
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread and join pipes
  • Test pipes for leaks with pressure gauges
  • May prepare cost estimates

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school is usually expected
  • Four- to five-year apprenticeship, or over five years of experience plus courses, for trade certification
  • Red Seal endorsement is available
Partly regulated: trade certification is compulsory in Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and voluntary in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, British Columbia and the territories (per NOC profile).
