Heavy-duty equipment mechanics repair, troubleshoot, overhaul and maintain mobile heavy machinery used in construction, mining, forestry, farming, transportation and similar work. They work for equipment owners, dealers, rental firms, railways and transit systems. Apprentices are included.

What the work involves

Main duties

  • Inspect bulldozers, cranes, graders and other heavy equipment to find faults
  • Diagnose problems with computerized and other test equipment
  • Adjust, repair or replace defective parts and systems
  • Test repaired equipment against manufacturer specifications
  • Do routine cleaning, lubrication and maintenance
  • Service attachments such as blades, ploughs and winches

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school plus training courses or a vocational program is usually required
  • A three- to five-year apprenticeship, or over four years of work experience with industry courses, to be eligible for trade certification
  • Red Seal endorsement is available through the interprovincial exam
Heavy-duty equipment technician certification is compulsory in Alberta and in Quebec (construction industry only), and voluntary in the other provinces and territories.
