What the work involves
Main duties
- Take patient histories, examine patients and order tests
- Diagnose and treat illness, injury and physiological disorders
- Prescribe and give medications and treatments
- Perform routine procedures and provide emergency and acute care
- Give vaccinations, prenatal and postnatal care and health advice
- Coordinate ongoing primary care and report notifiable diseases to authorities

Employment requirements
- Bachelor's degree (or a Quebec college program plus a year of pre-medicine university study) is usually required
- Graduation from an approved medical school and two to three years of family medicine residency
- Passing the Medical Council of Canada (or Collège des médecins du Québec) qualifying exams and licensing by the provincial or territorial authority
Regulated in every province and territory; a licence from the provincial or territorial medical regulatory authority is required.
