What the work involves
Main duties
- Read drawings, circuit diagrams and electrical code to plan wiring layouts
- Pull wire through conduit and install supports, fixtures, switches and breaker panels
- Splice and connect wiring to form circuits
- Test continuity and safety of installed systems
- Troubleshoot faults and replace faulty components
- Do preventive maintenance and keep maintenance records

Employment requirements
- Secondary school is usually required
- A four- to five-year apprenticeship is usually required
- Red Seal endorsement is available to construction electricians through the interprovincial exam
Trade certification for construction electricians is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and voluntary in BC and the territories.
