What the work involves

Main duties

  • Read blueprints and drawings and work out measurements and materials
  • Lay out work to meet building codes
  • Measure, cut, shape and join wood and other materials
  • Build foundations, floors, walls and roof structures
  • Install doors, stairs, trim and hardware
  • Repair and renovate buildings and supervise apprentices

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school is usually required
  • A three- to four-year apprenticeship, or over four years of trade experience with some courses, to be eligible for trade certification
  • Red Seal endorsement is available through the interprovincial exam
Trade certification for carpenters is compulsory in Quebec and voluntary in the other provinces and territories.
