Automotive service technicians diagnose, repair and maintain the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems of cars, buses and light commercial trucks. The group also covers truck and transport mechanics, truck-trailer repairers and mechanical repairers on vehicle assembly lines. Apprentices are included.

What the work involves

Main duties

  • Road test vehicles and use computer diagnostics to find faults
  • Repair or replace parts in engines, brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust and electrical systems
  • Test repaired systems against manufacturer specifications
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance such as oil changes and tune-ups
  • Explain completed work and future repair needs to customers
  • Repair chassis, air brakes and trailer systems on commercial trucks (truck and transport mechanics)

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school plus trade training or a vocational program
  • A four-year apprenticeship, or over four years of work experience with industry courses, to be eligible for trade certification
  • Red Seal endorsement is available through the interprovincial exam
Trade certification is compulsory for automotive service technicians in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta, and voluntary in the other provinces and territories; some sub-trades have their own rules.
