What the work involves

Main duties

  • Examine financial records, ledgers and statements to check accuracy and compliance with accounting standards
  • Plan, set up and maintain accounting systems and internal controls
  • Prepare financial statements, reports and income tax returns
  • Write audit reports with findings and recommendations
  • Give financial, business and tax advice to clients or management
  • Supervise junior accountants, technicians or articling students

Employment requirements

  • University degree plus a recognized professional accounting program (CPA, or legacy CA / CGA / CMA designations) with supervised practical experience
  • Auditors need accountant-level education and some accounting experience; internal auditing credentials may be asked for
  • Provincial or territorial licensing is usually required to practise public accounting; trustee in bankruptcy work needs its own licence
Public accounting practice is licensed by the provincial or territorial accounting body, and CPA certification is through a regulatory body in each province. Other accounting work in industry may not need a licence.
